Storm and hurricane readiness for Monroe renters
By Braud Properties · Last updated October 5, 2026 · How we write and check guides
Monroe is far from the coast, but the remains of hurricanes and strong spring storms can still bring high wind, flooding rain and power outages. Renters have different responsibilities than homeowners, so this checklist focuses on what you control.
Before storm season
Read your lease to see what it says about renter’s insurance, reporting damage and emergency contact. A landlord’s insurance usually covers the building, not your belongings. Ask an insurance agent whether a renter’s policy fits your situation.
Ready.gov keeps a federal hurricane checklist covering supplies, important documents and communication plans.
- Photograph your belongings and store the photos online.
- Keep your lease, ID and insurance details in a waterproof folder or cloud storage.
- Save the resident portal login and the utility outage numbers in your phone.
During and right after a storm
Call 911 for any immediate threat to life or safety. Report downed power lines and outages to the electric utility, not the property office. Once it is safe, report property damage through the Buildium Resident Center so there is a dated record.
Documenting damage
Take wide and close photos of any damage before you clean up, as long as it is safe. Note the date and time. Do not attempt repairs to electrical, gas or structural items yourself.
