Monroe renter checklist
Plan a rental move in manageable stages
A good move separates lease decisions, utility timing, address changes, condition records, and first-week follow-up. Adjust this checklist to your signed lease and exact Monroe rental.
After approval, before signing
Verify the property address and unit, rent, deposit, lease term, move-in date, included utilities, resident-paid utilities, pet terms if applicable, parking arrangements, and any move-in charges in the proposed lease. Ask questions before signing when language or responsibility is unclear.
Confirm how funds must be paid and how you will receive a receipt. Use the verified application or management channel, not payment instructions from an unexpected message. Save the signed lease, addenda, payment records, and contact information somewhere available during the move.
Two to four weeks before move-in
Arrange resident-paid services for the exact start date. For Monroe water, verify the City’s current requirements. For electricity, use Entergy Louisiana’s official start-or-move-service process if it serves the address. Check internet serviceability for the exact unit and allow for installation scheduling.
Schedule movers or helpers, measure large furniture and doorways when measurements are available, and plan a route that does not block neighbors or emergency access. Ask before reserving spaces, using unusual entrances, or bringing a large moving vehicle onto the property.
- Create a secure folder for the lease, provider confirmations, receipts, and condition photos.
- Arrange mail forwarding and update employers, financial institutions, insurers, and subscriptions directly.
- Review renters-insurance obligations in the lease and confirm effective dates with the insurer.
- Plan transport for medicines, identification, valuables, and documents rather than placing them on a moving truck.
The week before
Confirm the move-in date, key or access process, and any items management requires before possession. Do not assume keys can be collected early. Recheck utility confirmations and use the full unit address on every account.
Pack a first-night kit with medications, chargers, basic tools, cleaning supplies, towels, bedding, water, and weather-appropriate clothing. Monroe heat, humidity, and storms can affect loading plans, so watch official weather information and protect people before property.
Move-in day
Before unloading, walk through the home and create a dated condition record. Capture wide and close views of each room, appliance, fixture, door, window, floor, wall, ceiling, and existing defect. Complete any management form and submit it through the instructed channel.
Locate exits, smoke alarms, electrical panel, water shutoff only if it is accessible and you have been shown how to use it, and the safe route from the home. Never dismantle building equipment. Report active leaks, burning smells, sparking, or other immediate hazards appropriately; call 911 for immediate threats to life, safety, or property.
- Check that keys and access devices operate without forcing them.
- Test water, drains, lights, supplied appliances, and thermostat controls normally.
- Photograph accessible meter readings without entering restricted spaces.
- Keep pathways clear and remove moving materials in accordance with property rules.
During the first week
Unpack enough to observe the home in ordinary use. Submit maintenance concerns through the Buildium tenant portal with the location, symptoms, when the issue began, and useful photos. Do not use the general contact form as emergency monitoring.
Review waste handling, parking, guest, alteration, and maintenance provisions in the lease. Label your records by date and keep provider confirmations. If a condition was visible at move-in but missing from your initial record, document and report it promptly rather than waiting until move-out.
